Big Brother UK – Big Brother Axed

Sad news for Big Brother UK fans today as it is officially announced the show is to be axed and the next series will be the last. This comes as no surprise to most UK fans of the show who have seen the producers make mistake after mistake in recent years and seemingly give up on making an effort during Big Brother 10 and watched viewing figures fall dramatically. It may come as a surprise to a lot of international viewers though.

  1. I thought this was known for the last few years? I remember reading somewhere a couple years ago that one of the producers regretted that season 10 would not be the last. The only reason it’s continuing to next year is because of its contract.

  2. I am international viewer and not surprised that BB UK was axed. BB UK was bloody boring in comparison to BB Australia. Although I am curious what mistakes BB UK made that the Admin of this site speaks of.

  3. I am an international viewer, and I’m probably one of the few who is shocked it’s ending. I know that ratings haven’t been that great, but I figured that Channel 4 would keep it on the air regardless. If anyone wishes to say that BBUK is boring, I say: Watch BBUS. That show is boring as hell. The twists that the producers add to the show are really, really, REALLY ridiculous. Like the 9th season: Soulmates? Or this current season: High School Cliques? At least the UK had interesting formats like Fake Week in Series 8, Non-Housemate Status in Series 10, and the fluctuating prize fund in Series 5. The version on the other side of the pond keeps reusing the same ideas every year: having evicted housemates reenter the house, having houseguests from previous seasons reenter the house, America’s Player, Coup D’Etat, and unnecessary grouping of housemates (e.g. High School Cliques for the first part of this season). The US series has really strayed away from the original unique format it created in the second season. Too many irrelevant twists added to the game.

  4. Joshua summed it up. BBUS is not nearly as exciting as BBUK. They are two very different shows, actually. With BBUS it is all competition – we don’t even really have a “Big Brother” – never hear him talk or have him interact with the housemates. That is what I think is lacking from BBUS and the main reason why I love BBUK so much.

I am sad to see BBUK go, but I guess all good things must come to an end.

  5. I’m also interested in what Admin thinks were the producer’s mistakes. I think this year’s BB UK was one of the best I’ve ever seen. As for BB Aus, I only watched the first half of season 7, but I stopped because I got bored. The people were too nice and too like each other. There didn’t seem to be any personalities like BB UK provides. What I find interesting is all of the social dynamics. And, the BB US is just too phoney and staged for it to be interesting.

  6. I still don’t understand why they are letting it end. Didn’t he just say that the show is still the biggest program they have on channel 4 after all these years? How does a channel give up its biggest program and keep the advertising money that it generated? Unless they do it differently in the UK than they do it here in the US they are going to sub in a different show that no one will watch, lose the viewers that they had, and really lose a lot of money.
